Syndrome Definition

This is what Google detects as presumably the world's top content to help people understand: what means syndrome?:

You see there that the syndrome definition isn't as imprecise and contradictory as the other medical definitions. Yet it does certainly share their ambiguity. In particular, everywhere you come across the term "disease", it's being used haphazardly for all sorts of circumstances.

And seemingly, when the author feels it has been used too much, it gets again haphazardly replaced with even more imprecision ("condition"), or with ambiguity like "medical problems", "mental condition", "abnormality", and what not.

So then here's my Syndrome Definition.

What is Syndrome?

Syndrome is a symptom or more often a set of symptoms that may reliably identify a defect, disorder, or disease that we cannot yet specify or classify more precisely.

Syndrome Examples

  • Cushing's Syndrome: actually a disorder
  • Down Syndrome: actually a defect
  • Horner's Syndrome: actually a disorder

Note here: Anecdotal evidence that Horner's Syndrome "runs in families" and is an inherited defect appears to be based on frequent misinterpretation:

Is the defect inherited, or rather the behavior copied that causes the disorder?

More detail under inherited or acquired?
