Older Dog Problems

 Reviewed 3 June 2019

Senior dogs have their own challenges. A few are similar to puppies (for example older dogs again seek more attention and affection), yet most are rather unique and only older people can truly understand them, because they experience the same or similar challenges (for example incontinence).

However, despite some new challenges, older dogs offer us dog owners more joys than adult dogs and puppies when we look at the balance of joys and problems - because their behavior is so calm, controlled, considerate, and predictable.

Subject to upbringing, training and relationship, and health status (most of all, the health of the immune system!), your senior dog might pose some specific problems, or challenges. Yet in general, the most common older dog problems of German Shepherds are:

  • dog health
  • overweight
  • impaired senses and mobility

While all three affect dog health, you will see why we've made the split. Which older dog problems are your present concern?
