dog outingAt this time of reflection :-? I had a look at UNsubscribe rates and reasons, and thought I share that here with you.

Why I looked at it? Because I am the last one who would want to send a single email to someone who doesn't want it. Oh yes, I hate spam, I do. In both directions.

Analysis

The first 6 weeks (when new subscribers need to 'find their feet' with their new subscription) have had comparatively 'high' unsubscribes over the last two years. Still tiny compared to other sites, but high compared to ALL our unsubscribes AFTER the first 6 weeks. One point to note though: Obviously the later figures have to be lower, since less subscribers have received those emails yet.

Another point to note: In addition to the above, we have sent out 'admin' emails, and of course those lead to UNsubscribes too. Even an email notifying subscribers of 2 FREE books for which others paid 11 USD (like the email PLB and Q&A3 Free 18-Mar-14), led to 10 unsubscribes! 2 of which even filed as spam complaints, oh yes! Which is why Mailchimp threatened to close our account.chimp
Spam complaints! Here!! People are really strange these days. Thankfully, they left. Had they not, I'd have personally kicked them out! Straight into the mouths of the hungry wild dogs we have here.

Still, after week 6 you can say, a ridiculously small number of people UNsubscribe themselves. - However, note that WE have UNsubscribed thousands since 1 Aug 2012, based on Mailchimp's 'inactivity' statistics (non-opens).

Interesting sidenote: Yesterday, email sent to 200 subscribers, if still interested (haven't opened the last 20(!) emails). Sure, could be that these folks no longer have their dog (this indeed was the most common stated reason for UNsubscribes), or that our emails get buried under all their other emails, or whatever). Anyway: Of those who replied (to inform me that they are still interested), none had the decency to write their first "Thanks"!

What is wrong with today's people?!! Of course, all of them got UNsubscribed. In case one of them reads this now, to make that clear: You are not doing me a favor with your free subscription, I am doing you a favor, a HUGE favor. You neither support the site nor our rescue organization nor the breed nor your own dog if you can't differentiate between free and invaluable.

And a related note: When I looked at the reasons people stated when they unsubscribed, I saw that - oddly - a few folks wrote sth like "you only want to sell your books!". So, let me make this very clear here as well: I do not care an inch whether you buy or indeed download for free my books - unless after READING you post a public review or send me your personal feedback. Since hardly anyone ever does either of this ... [now eyes back up to what I wrote after the colon].

So why do I value an actual READER's feedback so much more than a purchase or free download?

Because I am not a Cesar Millan or similar bestseller author who earns millions from book sales alone (sales to readers they don't even know). - $152 in June from ALL my books together(!) (of which affiliated dog rescues get half!) is nothing compared to the cost base of mygermanshepherd.org (of which affiliated dog rescues bear zero). Thus if you belong to the modern mischievous internet freebie surfer: get some business common sense first, before you write such embarassingly stupid spam complaints.

Conclusion

Thanks to the above analysis, the first 6 Periodical notification emails (and maybe those Periodicals too) will undergo a revision. However note that - with OUR PROCESS of email sends - the first emails will always have higher unsubscribes than the later ones, because people haven't received the later emails yet and it's all new to them (most people struggle with anything new). This, although MYGERMANSHEPHERD.ORG has the most detailed "What you can expect to get" info ever seen in America right on the subscribe page.

Given our most detailed subscribe page, everyone who can READ should know exactly what to expect to receive. Sadly today, it seems, many people cannot read. Great, that those then UNsubscribe. Not sure though why, and how, they could possibly subscribe at all?

I really don't know what could be improved so as to only attract those who are really interested. If you have an idea, please kindly let me know.

Cheers! :-)
